Wilesco D 305 Steamdriven Fire Engine
D305 - The Mobile Steam-Powered Fire Engine from Wilesco
In 1987, Wilesco released its first mobile steam engine in the form of a fire engine. The fire engine was modeled after the automotive Magirus steam pump, which was used by fire departments in Germany, England, and the US around the turn of the century.
The small, mobile, and steam-powered version of the Wilesco fire engine is modeled after the original down to the smallest detail. With simple heating using our dry fuel Witabs, the fire engine can move forward and backward, making it fun for the whole family.
Just like its model, the steam-powered car has a standing boiler and drive. The self-priming water pump can be put into operation with the clutch lever. Under the front bench seat of the fire engine is a water supply tank. This has a direct hose connection to the water pump. The benches are made of wood, the boiler itself and all pipes are made of brass.
"Real" functioning water jet of the Wilesco fire engine Of course, the water jet can also be used as such, just like a real fire engine. The pump that can be operated draws water from the water tank under the bench seat. This can then be sprayed up to 3 meters away. The pressure of the water can be adjusted with the steam shut-off valve. As with the original, the D305's water tank can be refilled with a hose. This means that on the one hand, the boiler can be manually filled with water, but on the other hand, a hose can be hung in water, for example in a water glass, and refilled through the suction function of the tank. To do this, simply turn the flywheel in the other direction.
Did you know...
...that fire trucks in Germany are completely different from those in the US, for example? This is because German fire departments must be as multifunctional as possible because they drive to many different deployments in diverse situations. A German fire truck must be able to travel through both urban areas and forests and fields.
...that the first fire pumps were already invented in ancient Rome? The first public fire departments were organized under Emperor Augustus.
...that the very first fire trucks were built as carriages and wagons? The fire brigade or their horses then pulled them to the deployment site. During industrialization, these were further developed to be motorized. However, widespread use took a long time: it was feared that the weight of the motorized vehicles would cause damage to the streets.
